Foundation English for the Tertiary Level is a foundational course that seeks to address the
English Language difficulties which have been manifested in participants’ written work.
It is designed to develop participants’ abilities to think, organize, and express their ideas clearly
and effectively, so that they become able to confidently pursue their studies at the tertiary level.
The components of the course give participants the opportunity to revisit and build on
fundamental skills learnt at the secondary level in the mechanics of grammar, syntax and writing,
to enable them to make the transition to academic writing at the tertiary level.
Participants will also learn how to apply critical thinking skills to analyse, synthesize and evaluate
information to produce well written documents.
This course introduces participants to computing theory and the use of various computing
applications. The objectives of the course are (a) to convey an understanding of the operations
of computers, (b) to develop in the participants the facility to use the computer to produce
financial and management reports and (c) enable participants to use computer technology to
benefit the organisation. Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to apply such
learning to improve decision making in relation to applicable systems, processes, hardware and
software infrastructure to fully utilise the benefits improved information technology systems can
bring to an organisation.
This
course will develop participants’ written communication skills especially as it relates to producing
academic essays, research papers, reports and project documents. Focus will also be on
developing the ability to think critically and employ creative problem solving techniques.
Additionally, participants will be exposed to different research methods and techniques in order
to effectively plan, conduct and evaluate basic research within their respective organisations.
